Every homeowner wants a healthy beautiful lawn and with the proper lawn maintenance, it will be achieved. First time buyers of homes will start from scratch in the care of their yard. Deciding what to plant makes the difference in how long it takes grass to grow.

What does laying sod do that grass seed does not? Sod takes more time to plant and priced higher. The one disadvantage to sod is dry patches showing up later. Once planted it becomes hard to reapply making individuals frustrated. If you live in an area that does not germinate well, you might consider going anther route for planting grass.

Spreading grass seed is the less expensive of the two and takes far less time to plant when you have other things you would rather do with your time. Grass seed can be reapplied as many times as needed especially in hard to germinate areas. However, it takes longer to grow but if you are willing to wait this is a better option.

Planting sod takes time and patience. Place sod patches side by side in a staggering position. Push both ends together then press into the ground with a two inch overlap. Continue all the way around the yard until completely finished. Avoid the checkerboard look, it is not appealing at all.

How to lay grass seed is simply and affordable. It is a lot less work involved than planting sod. Simply spread seed evenly across the ground, cover with straw to keep moist. Do not lay straw or hay on seed heads unless you like weeds more than you let on.

How do individuals plant grass seed? Spreading seed is much simpler and less work than laying sod. Spread seed on top of the top soil and place straw over top to keep moisture in. Keep in mind not to use hay or stray with seed heads because you run the risk of weeds returning.

Maintain by staying off sod for four weeks and off grass for eight weeks. Apply herbicide to keep weeds from growing back. Water as often as possible to ensure proper growth.
