Films on Fridges: Outdoor Cinema Made Entirely from Recycled Refrigerators Pops Up in London!
Watching an indie film outdoors on a summer evening in London might sound like a night to remember – but if the theater and concessions were made entirely from recycled refrigerators it would definitely be a difficult night to forget! Films on Fridges is a pop-up outdoors cinema built entirely from discarded fridges that featured critically acclaimed indie films at a location right in front of the London 2012 Olympic site. It was inspired by (and made from) East London’s iconic ‘Fridge Mountain’ – Europe´s biggest stack of discarded fridges, which measured 20 feet high.
Thanks to a $7,000 cash injection from Kickstarter and a joint effort between Sims Recycling Solutions, Picture House Hackney, and the event´s organizers, Films on Fridges is now a reality. The sold-out event, which lasted for several weeks this summer, commented on our throwaway culture by reclaiming a tremendous amount of scrap material. Discarded fridges were used to construct just about everything at this fantastic pop-up cinema, and Inhabitat was there to bring you exclusive photos.
